During Fall 2013 through Spring 2014, in my first two semesters as a HRC Film Archives volunteer, I identified, cataloged and preserved 217 16mm and 35mm films from the KUT/Feld collection. I also trained and managed two other volunteers during the Spring semester when the project started to look a bit unwieldy for just one person! These films were mostly unidentified and much of the information on the can was either mislabeled or unlabeled. I put each reel on a rewind table and searched for title/date/descriptive information. Many of the films turned out to be prints of shorts by silent film stars Laurel & Hardy or Charley Chase. Once identified, the volunteers and I input information into the film database and renumbered each film. We rewound the film onto archival cores and placed into vented film cans and back into the cold storage room.
